Are You Prepared for a Hurricane?!
June 1 marks the beginning of hurricane season. Last year, residents felt the effects of two strong Hurricanes, Dennis and Floyd, which dumped substantial rain on our area and subjected many to strong winds, hail, and rising waters. Predictions for this year's hurricane season show the East Coast as a prime target for a record number of hurricanes, and weather officials recommend that proper planning is essential to prepare for a disaster before it strikes. The following are suggestions from the Prince William Chapter of the American Red Cross:
* Know what a hurricane watch and warning mean and what to do if they are posted: a watch means hurricane conditions are possible in the specified area, usually within 36 hours, and a warning means hurricane conditions are expected in the specified area, usually within 24 hours
* Prepare a personal evacuation plan
* Assemble a disaster supplies kit
* Prepare for high winds
* Know what to do when a hurricane is over
For more information, or for a free copy of the "Hurricane Preparedness" brochure, call 703-368-4511 or e-mail [email protected].
