Message from the Chair

November 5th is a critical date for all Virginians.  Its Election Day.

• Its the day that we all have the opportunity to vote on important issues that affect our quality of life.     Instead of feeling that we have no control over transportation and education issues, we can take    control by voting.

• Its the American way to have our voices heard--by voting.

• Whats so important to get you to drive to your polling place on the 5th?  Four ballot questions will be    there for you to voice your opinion.

Transportation  Referendum:

• By voting yes for the half-cent sales tax increase, we will generate $5 billion to invest in improving our    transit system, our roadways and our quality of life.   It will cost 25-cents per day per household to help us    improve our quality of life.

• Many people ask if all the money will stay in Northern Virginia and the answer is yes, 100% of it.  The Chamber    has a list of the projects that will be funded many in the Prince William County Greater Manassas area.      Look for the project listing at our monthly luncheons.  The Chamber supports this Referendum and    encourages you to do the same.

Prince William Local Transportation Bond:

• The County has financed several important roads through local bonds.  A great example:  Prince William    Parkway.  How much easier for all of us to travel from Rt 66 to Interstate 95 with the Parkway completed.     Kudos to our local governmentofficials for finding ways to improve traffic flows inside the County.

• Once again they will present us with a Transportation Bond that will allow several critical road
projects to    move forward.  Bonds are not a tax increase but rather a financing method within thestate budget.

Sudley Manor Dr. from existing terminus to Linton Hall Rd.

Route 15 improvements to missing links.

Minnieville Rd. from Old Bridge Rd. to Caton Hill Rd.

Benita Fitzgerald Dr. from existing terminus to Cardinal Dr.

Prince William Pkwy. Improvements at Old Bridge Rd. and Minnieville Rd.

Route 1 improvements (To be used throughout the corridor).

Universities, Colleges, Community Colleges and Museums $900 Million Bond:

• This is being referred to as the Higher Education Bond.  This bond will be used for new buildings and critical    renovations in every region of the State. It will provide space for the 32,000 additional college bound    students expected by 2008. Without the additional space, many students will be forced to attend out of    state schools.

• Locally, George Mason University will receive $80 million and Northern Virginia Community College will    receive $35 million. These construction projects will benefit our Northern Virginia economy with jobs.

State Parks and Natural Areas $119 Million Bond:
For 11 existing parks, 10 new natural preserves and eightexisting preserves will be purchased. More than 70    park improvement projects will be accomplished in all of Virginias state parks.

• In my line of work, I listen to numerous conversations about the frustrations of traffic and education needs. I    hear conversations on how difficult the commute times are or how difficult it is to get a child into a state    school. Vote this year and have a direct effect on both these issues.

• Encourage your employees, your co-workers  and your neighbors to do the same. You will bring long-term    positive changes in our community. Its part of our civic duty to vote and thats why these important    questions are asked of us. This bond provides for three new state parks, additional land.

• When I was young, my mother asked me: Would you want to live in a world where you were not asked to    vote on important issues but instead had someone elses decisions imposed on you? As an independent 18    year old, I confidently told her, she was silly and of course not. Her response, which I still remember today    was Then you need to protect your American rights to be asked by taking the time to vote every year even    when its inconvenient for you.
Thank you for allowing me to Carry the Flame into our community.
