Dear
Chamber Member,
November
4 th is election day. Historically an offyear election does
not generate the interest of a national election. As a result,
fewer people exercise their right to vote than in the elections
when the presidency is being contested. This is perplexing
because many issues before the electorate during the off year
elections will have a far greater impact on the local populace
than a presidential election. This is certainly the case this
year for our chamber members. On Election Day, you will have
the opportunity to elect representatives for the state legislature,
determine the make up of the county board of supervisors and
who will lead the sheriff's office. You will also elect members
of the Prince William County School Board; as well as cast
votes on other important local issues.
Most
of us are small business owners. It is easy to become so involved
with your business and family activities that the election
kind of sneaks up and catches us unprepared or worse, unaware.
During the political campaigns, there is also a tendency to
become caught up in the rhetoric. Unfortunately, the smoke
and mirrors of election oratory frequently drowns out reality.
Remember, the individuals elected on November 4 will pass
laws and determine policies that will directly affect you,
your business and your children for years to come. Do your
homework and don't let the crowd that makes the most noise
influence your decisions.
Regardless
of your political views, it is a duty as well as a privilege
to be an informed voter. I strongly encourage
you to become familiar with the issues and the candidates
in your respective jurisdiction. Then take the next step and
VOTE, without regard to partisan politics,
for the individuals who you believe will best serve the communities
interests. Every vote makes a difference. Many elections are
decided by a few votes, as was the last presidential election!
Do not allow the process to work without your input. Cast
your informed vote on November 4. Voting is your license
to compliment or complain about our political leaders if they
do not perform as you expect. If you don't cast your informed
vote you have no right to complain.
