2009 Shelley Krasnow Community Service Award The Prince William County-Greater Manassas Chamber of Commerce presented the final two Shelley Krasnow Community Service Awards to GFWC Dominion Woman’s Club in the category of Arts and Education and Project Mend-A-House, Inc. in the category of Health and Human Services. Both organizations received a plaque and a check for $1,000. Their names will also be engraved on a permanent plaque which hangs in the Chamber main office. The awards were presented by Todd W. Hewitt, Executive Vice President of Cardinal Bank, this year’s Shelley Krasnow Community Service Awards sponsor at the annual Community Showcase Luncheon held on Tuesday, February 24th at the Best Western Battlefield Inn in Manassas. The luncheon was sponsored by The Cancer Center at Lake Manassas and Touching Hearts at Home on behalf of Capital Hospice. For the past two decades, the Greater Chamber has been presenting the awards annually to local nonprofit organizations in recognition for the service they provide to our community. Next year, the name will be retired in order to honor a more recent local philanthropist. The award was named for the late Mr. Shelley Krasnow, who served as Chair of the Greater Chamber in 1954-55, was founder and president of Virginia Industrial Corporation, Rt. 66 Corporation and Georator Corporation and served on the board of directors for Prince William Hospital; Dominion Bank Shares and Security Bank in Manassas (the predecessor to BB&T). Upon his death in 1989, he endowed the Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study in collaboration with George Mason University.
The money for the award was raised by the Chamber’s Community Relations Committee at the Cuisine de Commerce Luncheon held every year in November. The Community Showcase is one of the many benefits of membership in the Prince William County–Greater Manassas Chamber of Commerce. The purpose of the luncheon is to highlight member nonprofits and the work they perform in the community. Not only are they offered free exhibit space at the event in which to distribute information about their organization and its mission, but their services are also highlighted to other businesses through the Shelley Krasnow Community Service Award nomination and award process. Nominees There were 33 nonprofit organizations or programs nominated for this year’s Shelley Krasnow Community Service Award:
